As Backyard Wildstream has grown, we’ve spent a lot of time observing the feeding habits and behaviour of the birds visiting the garden. One thing we’ve noticed is that some of the mixed bird feed we originally used contained lower-grade filler seeds that many birds would naturally discard while searching for their preferred foods.

This created several challenges, including unnecessary waste, excess seed spillage on the ground, and a less nutritious feeding environment overall. It also limited the variety of species regularly visiting the feeders.

To improve both the wellbeing of the wildlife and the livestream experience, we are now transitioning towards higher-quality individual seed types and specialised feeds that birds genuinely enjoy and actively seek out. Different feeders will contain different seed varieties, such as sunflower kernels, niger seeds, suet and nuts for the squirrels helping to provide a more natural and diverse feeding environment while significantly reducing waste. 

Although this approach requires greater ongoing investment, we believe it is an important step for the project. Higher-quality food supports healthier wildlife, attracts a wider variety of birds and visitors, and creates a cleaner, more engaging viewing experience for everyone watching the live stream.

We are also bring in a bird bath with solar fountain to provide a clean and fresh water source during the summer.
